This is Rex. Put Rex in your profile picture. Rex will get you dates.

Even though the East Coast is usually coated in a layer of ice well into April, it’s going to be spring eventually — which means it’s the perfect time to update your profile so you’ll be ready to find summer love.

While you wait for the ice to melt, here are a few tips to give your OkCupid profile some spring flare:

Add 1 new photo

Adding one photo gets you at least 2x the likes (and your likes increase if you add more photos). Plus, it gives people a better idea of who you are.

So go ahead — add a photo from your trip to the Icelandic Geothermal Pools. Or a picture of when you tried to go hygge. The more pictures, the more likely you’ll make a connection.

Consider adding an animal to the mix

For some reason, and we don’t know why, having a dog in your photo increases your likes. It doesn’t have to be your dog, and please don’t steal a dog. All we’re saying is take a picture with one.

Find the essay sweet spot

People who’ve found love on OkCupid (meaning couples who’ve mutually deactivated) have had self-summaries that are an average of 50 words long, or 256 characters. So if you’re really looking for love, less than two tweets length puts you in the best position.

Send a message to someone who already likes you

You’re between 1.5–3x more likely to get a reply if you message somebody that has already given you a star. So check out your likes list (note: you can see who likes you within DoubleTake or A-List), and see who catches your fancy. Who knew the odds were already in your favor?

Keep first messages to 40 and 100 characters long

Messages with the best chance of a reply are between 40 and 100 characters long. What’s more important, though, is to pick up on something that you found interesting in their profile, like a photo or a detail (saying “hey” 30 times isn’t going to cut it).

If you’re a woman, your chances are automatically greater

Women who send the first message have a greater chance of getting a response — in fact, women are 2.5x more likely to get a response than men if they initiate the conversation. The ball is in your court, ladies!

So if you really want a spring fling or a summer love (or hey — both!) apply these tips to your OkCupid experience. You just might find your warm weather honey.
